Phonics
We use the Wilson Fundations program to teach everything from letter formation and phonological/phonemic awareness to letter sound relationships for reading and spelling. We incorporate this sequential, explicit system into our language arts block in a variety of ways for 30 minutes daily. For more information on Fundations, please visit:

Reading
This year, our first graders will participate in the Reader's Workshop program from Lucy Calkins. They will continue to develop good reading habits as they explore both fiction and non-fiction texts. Students will be taught strategies for word-solving, comprehension and fluency and will participate in independent, partner and small group reading with "just right" books.

Math
Using a workshop model, we will cover topics ranging from sums and differences, measurement and data collection, place value, money and telling time. We will combine work from Developing Number Concepts and the Mathematics Navigations series. Students will have ample opportunity to develop their number sense with hands-on activities and games and to share ways of thinking.

Open Circle
In order to teach our students the skills and tools they need for successful peer relationships and to support them in social/emotional problem-solving, we use a program called Open Circle. Some of the topics we cover in our class meetings include: getting to know each other's similarities and differences, listening and speaking up, managing feelings, including one another and cooperation, teasing and bullying.
